Polish, Russian duos prevail in tiebreakers

Yangzhou, China, October 10, 2018 – Poland’s Jakub Szalankiewicz and Maciej Rudol, Russia’s Maxim Sivolap and Artem Yarzutkin prevailed in their respective qualification matches on Wednesday to complete the main draw cast of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Yangzhou 4-star.

Szalankiewicz and Rudol started with a good run in the opening set with a 21-14 win, but lost their momentum in the next set as Ukrainian rivals Vladyslav Iemelianchyk and Denys Denysenko fought back to extend the match with an intense 29-27 win. The Polish side had the final say and secured the match at 15-9.

Sivolap and Yarzutkin rallied from a set down to record a 2-1 (17-21, 21-17, 15-17) against Japan’s Takumi Takahashi and Yusuke Ishijima, while the United States’ Miles Evans and William Kolinske also prevailed in a similar scenario against Japan’s Katsuhiro Shiratori and Yu Koshikawa to win 2-1 (18-21, 21-16, 15-9).

“It was tough match especially in the third set,” Yarzutkin said. “Both teams ended up very tired after that intense match. We had a very good opponent and they played with excellent technique and they had a good sideout game.”
