Poland defeats Dutch for second Polish WTF win

Michal Bryl / Grzegorz Fijalek Poland (9) def. Alexander Brouwer / Robert Meeuwsen Netherlands (3) 21-16, 19-21, 15-9 (50)

Grzegorz Fijalek, Poland - “It was a tough game especially against Brouwer and Meeuwsen, one of the best teams in the world. We played very well in the practice and we kept our level and we served much hard than our opponent, so I think the serve made the difference. If you win the second set, you are in a better position, but we started the third set four points up and that was important. It’s part of the European Championships for us but the Brazilian teams changed in the middle of the season, but we try to focus on our side. We must play at a high level and concentrate. We are still a young team, this is only our second year (together), my partner is 24 and for him it’s a big success to be one of the best teams in the world.”

Alex Brouwer, Netherlands - “It’s disappointing that we didn’t play the way we wanted to. We couldn’t get the pressure on them with the serving and the defense. They were serving strong and there were too many moments where we didn’t control their serve. It’s unfortunate but on to the next. It’s not a statement. I think it has to do with the Brazilians mixing up with the teams, the Americans playing a lot of AVP tournaments so it’s not a big surprise for me. It’s a big thing for the press and everybody is talking about the second European Championships of this year. I’m sure you see in the other World Tour (events) the Brazilians are starting to do better and Nick and Phil aren’t playing their best. Were just focused on our own game and we don’t care if we beat Europeans or Americans or Brazilians, we just want to beat every team.”

Robert Meeuwsen, Netherlands - “It feels like we were playing with the hand brake on all the time except for the part of the second set where we just went all-out. We finally found our game back in then in the third set we played the same way we played the first. This evening is a new chance.”
