FIVB U19 World Championships down to final four

 


Porto, Portugal, July 13,
2013 – The line-ups for the semifinals of the 12th edition of the FIVB Beach
Volleyball U19 World Championships were decided on Saturday in Porto.


 

Five of the eight remaining
teams are from Europe. Germany and USA have one team each in the girls’ and
boys’ final four.


 

Germany has won the most
medals in the past, four in the boys’ competition and nine in the girls’.


 

Germany and USA straight into
final four at their first U19 World Champs


Germany’s Moritz Reichert and
Clemens Wickler and USA’s Torey DeFalco and Lucas Yoder marched straight into
the final four on Saturday at their first ever FIVB Beach Volleyball U19 World
Championships.


 

Both teams topped their pool
on Friday. The Americans continued with straight wins after that, Germany lost
one set to home team Tomas and Diogo in the second elimination round. More


 

USA’s Hughes
and Claes knock out two title favourites to reach the U19 final four


USA’s Sara Hughes and Kelly Claes impressed friends and foes by knocking
out two title favourites on Saturday to reach the final four of the FIVB Beach
Volleyball U19 World Championships.



The American girls where not joking when they said that they were going for the
gold after they defeated the Polish U21 champions Katarzyna Kociolek and Jagoda
Gruszscynska 2-0 (21-16 21-19). More


 

USA upset Polish U21 world champion

Porto,
Portugal, July 13, 2013 – USA’s Sara Hughes and Kelly Claes produced the first
big upset of the FIVB Beach Volleyball U19 World Championships on Saturday. The
American girls knocked out the U21 world champions Katarzyna Kociolek and
Jagoda Gruszczynska in the second elimination round, winning 2-0 (21-16 21-19).




Hughes has some experience, competing in youth and junior world championships
before and finishing fourth last year at the U21 with Summer Ross, but 17-year
old Claes made her international debut in Porto. More


 

Pedro Henrique Resende Santos
– living up to the legend


“The first years of my life I
hated volleyball. Really, really hated it, because it took my father away from
me”, says 16-year old Pedro Henrique Resende Santos. His father is 38-year old
beach volleyball legend Ricardo Santos.



But after the Pan American Games in 2007 in Rio de Janeiro, where his father
competed, something changed. “I could not stop myself liking the sport. I felt
so proud. Just seeing him play and win that gold medal. The whole arena shouted
‘Brazil, Brazil’. It was a very happy moment for me and my father.” More


 

The semifinals of the FIVB U19
World Championships are scheduled for 11.00 (girls) and 12.00 (boys), followed
by the bronze medal matches at 15.00 and 16.00 and the finals at 17.00 and
18.00.


 

The U19 World Championships in
Porto are the final of three FIVB age group events this year. Myslowice staged
the U23 and Umag the U21 World Championships in June.
