Americans defeat European champions

Sara Hughes / Summer Ross United States (10) def. Sanne Keizer / Madelein Meppelink Netherlands (8) 21-15, 24-22 (36)

Summer Ross, United States - “It was so intense out there, the Netherlands played really well and we just had to battle, side out and dig balls and Sara was doing her thing and we were clicking out there. This one (Sara) is ridiculous. That’s why I’m serving to look block because I look back and expect it to be dug. She played a heck of a game and that’s why we won that game. Sara dug a ton of balls. We need to get more physical so we can sustain out there. I think it comes down to fatigue sometimes and we get in a rut. We’re working on it.”

Sara Hughes, United States - “We just looked at each other and said we’re playing as a team just one sideout at a time and that’s what we did. We had to win and we did our job out there. All we can do is just wait it out and hopefully the volleyball gods are on our side. Our goal is to keep making progress as a team so now I still want to be playing in this tournament so we’ll see.”

Sanne Keizer, Netherlands - “We had the same problems as in every other games, we couldn’t close the sets. Second set was a lot better than the first and we tried to measure up with them, who are very solid, but we made too many mistakes. It’s obviously not good to end the season with four losses, but we are very happy that we had a chance to play here and about the progress we made.”
