Thais stun Brazilians, march into men’s quarterfinals in Nanjing

 
Nanjing, China, July 13, 2018 – Drama unfolded on centre court on Friday, as Thais Phichakon Narathon/Phanupong Thanan’s determined efforts stunned Brazilian second seeds Gabriel Zuliani/Gabriel De Abreu Lima Pisco 2-0 (21-19, 21-18) in the Round of 16 of the FIVB Beach Volleyball U19 World Championships.



The Thais kept a perfect record, winning all their matches in straight sets to make it to the men’s quarterfinals.

Russia’s Alexey Gusev/Pavel Shustrov and Argentina’s Mauro Zelayeta/Bautista Amieva also kept their perfect run and advanced to the final eight with victories over Hungary’s Artur Hajos/Bence Attila Streli 2-0 (21-17, 22-20) and France’s Vivien Tournier/Paul Nicole 2-0 (21-16, 21-14), respectively.

Among those teams that advanced directly to the Round of 16 are Germany’s Lukas Pfretzschner/Filip John and Poland’s Dominik Poznanski/Mikolaj Miszczuk, who made respective triumphs against Mozambique’s Jorge Monjane/Arsenio Guvu 2-0 (21-18, 21-15) and Australia’s James Takken/Mark Nicolaidis 2-0 (21-17, 16-21, 15-12).

In the other matches, Russians Denis Shekunov/Dmitrii Veretiuk won their Round of 24 match against Chileans Vicente Droguett/Gaspar Lammel 2-0 (21-14, 21-17), before snapping the winning run of Germany’s Rudy Schneider/Simon Pfretzschner 2-0 (21-14, 21-14).

Indonesia’s Bintang Akbar/Danang Herlambang eliminated top seeds Liu Jinqiu/Tang Xingyu 2-0 (21-12, 21-14) and Switzerland’s Nathan Broch/Timon Gysin 2-1 (21-16, 19-21, 17-15), while brothers Javier and Joaquin Bello of England knocked out Kazakhstan’s Nurdos Aldash/Abdulmajid Makhmohammad 2-0 (21-15, 21-13) and Italy’s Alberto Di Silvestre/Tobia Marchetto 2-0 (21-14, 21-12).
