Vietnam, Thailand & Switzerland host next World Tour events

Lausanne, Switzerland, May 7, 2018 - After a weekend where nearly 300 teams from more than 50 countries competed for nearly $500,000 in prize money at four different sites, the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour features three tournaments in southeast Asia and central Europe.

This week’s FIVB calendar features World Tour events in Vietnam (Tuan Chau Island) Thailand (Bangkok) and Switzerland (Lucerne) where a total of 182 teams (91 men’s and 91 women’s) from 45 countries have entered the three tournaments where $170,000 in prize money will be awarded.

The $10,000 Vietnam women’s only tournament will be first up this week starting Wednesday followed a few hours later that day by the $150,000 Switzerland competition for men and women. The first serve at the $10,000 Bangkok event will be Thursday for both men and women.

With the Vietnam event being a first stop in the country, Lucerne hosts its third FIVB event after staging a World Tour event in 2015 and hosting the Under-19 World Championships in 2016. Bangkok hosted a women’s only FIVB Challenger/Satellite in 2005.

At last week’s events, 11 countries captured medals at the FIVB World Tour events in the Philippines, Cambodia, Turkey and the United States with podium-topping performances for pairs from Austria, Brazil, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands and Russia.

Of the six gold medal winning countries last week, the team of Lena Plesiutschnig/Katharina Schutzenhofer became the first women’s pair from Austria to win an FIVB World Tour title after topping the podium in Turkey at the Mersin Open. A week earlier in Malaysia, Simon Fruhbauer/Jorg Wutzl became the first Austrian men’s team to top a World Tour podium by winning the gold medal at the Langkawi Open.
