Brazilians rule Yangzhou women’s qualification

 
Yangzhou, China, October 10, 2018 – Three Brazilian pairs advanced to the main draw after strong wins over their respective opponents in the qualification round of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Yangzhou 4-star on Wednesday.



Qinzhou 3-star winners Ana Patricia Silva and Rebecca Cavalcanti led the Brazilian pack with a 2-0 (21-16, 21-7) win over Canada’s Caleigh Cruickshank and Anna Dunn-Suen.

In other matches, Angela Lavalle and Carol Horta defeated the Czech Republic’s Michaela Kubickova and Michala Kvapilova 2-0 (21-18, 21-11), while Taina Silva and Victoria Lopes Pereira stunned Japan’s Sakurako Fujii and Samaa Miyagawa 2-0 (21-9, 21-14).

These three pairs will join their compatriots Barbara/Fernanda, Josi/Lili and Maria Clara/Elize Maia in the main draw starting October 11.

“We always play each other in the Brazilian Championships and there is always tough competition, we are happy because of the challenge,” Taina said. “For our team, I cay say that we are brave and never give up easily. We are glad that we were able to win and improve, and we hope we can show our best tomorrow.”

Ukrainian and Thai pairs had one win each in their qualification round clashes. Ukraine’s Valentyna Davidova and Ievgeniaa Shchpkova trounced Thai counterparts Thanarattha Udomchavee and Yodsaphat Pakham 2-0 (21-11, 21-17), while Varapatsorn Radarong and Khanittha Hongpak prevailed against Diana Lunina and Maryna Samoday 2-1 (13-21, 21-18, 15-12).

USA’s Betsi Flint and Emily Day and China’s Bai Bing and Yuan Lvwen also moved to the next round following straight-set wins. USA’s Kelly Claes and Kerri Walsh Jennings advanced straight to the main draw with a bye in the qualification.
