Schnetzer/Mullner clinch quarterfinals berth in Manila, snap Wutzl/Fruhbauer's win streak

 
Manila, Philippines, May 4, 2018 – Austria’s Florian Schnetzer and Daniel Mullner clinched a quarterfinals berth in the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Manila Open, along with Germany’s Max-Jonas Karpa/Milan Sievers and Switzerland’s Simon Hagenbuch/Quentin Metral and Gabriel Kissling/Michiel Zandbergen at the SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds on Friday.



The second-seeded Schnetzer/Mullner opened a successful bid in the main draw with a win over the Philippines’ Raphy Abanto/John Juban 2-0 (21-10, 21-14). The duo also snapped Jorg Wutzl/Simon Fruhbauer’s winning streak in the World Tour with a 2-0 (21-18, 21-13) win to rule Pool B.

In Pool A, Karpa/Sievers are on an upward trend since winning two victories in the qualification round. The German pair prevailed in two more matches – both three-setters – against Russia’s Petr Bakhnar/Taras Myskiv 2-1 (14-21, 21-18, 16-14) and Swedish top seeds Martin Appelgren/Simon Boman 2-1 (21-13, 18-21, 15-13).

Two Swiss pairs moved straight to the quarterfinals, following their respective double victories in pool play.

Metral/Hagenbuch scored a 2-0 (22-20, 28-26) win against Austria’s Felix Friedl/Maximillian Trummer before they gave a better performance against the host country’s Alnakran Abdilla/Edwin Tolentino to win 2-0 (21-14, 21-15) in Pool C.

Kissling G./Zandbergen recorded a 2-0 (21-13, 21-19) win over Spain’s Alejandro Huerta/Javier Huerta and finally completed the day with a 2-0 (21-15, 21-12) victory over Chinese Taipei’s Ya-Jen Hsieh/Chin-Ju Wang.
