Top seeds challenged in Phnom Penh

 
Phnom Penh, Cambodia, May 4, 2018 - Germany's Karoline Froehlich / Viktoria Seeber scored major upsets on the opening day of the women's only Anchor International Beach Volleyball Carnival Phnom Penh 2018 FIVB World Tour two-star event in the Cambodian capital today.

Seeded at the very bottom at the start of the tournament, it was the first ever FIVB tournament for the German pair and they moved through the Qualification Tournament with a 2-0 (21-10, 21-6) victory against Malaysians Shu Woon Joo / Lai Jessie and then topped this with a sweep of top seeds Phoebe Bell / Jessyka Ngauamo of Australia 2-0 (21-15, 21-17).

Second-seeded Ksenia Dabizha / Daria Mastikova of Russia also suffered an upset in their opening match in the hands of another German side that came in through the qualifiers. Anna Behlen / Sarah Schneider shut out Sweden's Josefine Tivefalt / Isabelle Pahlsson 2-0 (21-14, 21-8) to advance to the Main Draw, where they promptly edged the Russians 2-0 (21-15, 22-20).

Japan's Sayaka Mizoe / Suzuka Hashimoto were the only pairing of the top three to keep their seed, downing Sweden's Sofia Ogren / Sofia Wahlen 2-0 (21-18, 21-14).

The Main Draw continues on Saturday with the remaining matches of pool play, plus the start of the single elimination bracket. The semifinals and finals of the Phnom Penh event on Diamond Island are scheduled for Sunday.
