Manila sets stage for its first World Tour 1-star event

 
Manila, Philippines, May 2, 2018 – The Philippine capital of Manila sets the stage for its first ever 1-star event, the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Manila Open.

The Manila Open features an exhilarating double-gender event at the SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds from May 3 to 6.



Sweden’s Martin Appelgren and Simon Bowman head the Manila men’s main draw entry list, while Paraguay’s Michelle Sharon Valiente Amarilla and Erika Sofia Mongelos Bobadilla lead the women’s main draw contenders.

Simon Fruhbauer/Jorg Wutzl of Austria will chase back-to-back 1-star titles in Manila following their men’s top podium finish in Langkawi with an undefeated record since the qualification round.

Among the Langkawi 1-star podium finishers who will be in Manila are men’s silver medallists Petr Bakhnar/Taras Myskiv of Russia and women’s silver medallists Katja Stam/Julia Wouters of the Netherlands.



The countries represented in the men’s competition include Australia, Austria, Canada, Chinese Taipei, Germany, Hong Kong, Israel, Malaysia, Oman, Poland, Russia, Singapore, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, Venezuela and host Philippines.

Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Paraguay, South Africa, Spain, Thailand, United States will join the host nation in the women’s competition.



The competition will start with the men’s qualification tournament on Thursday, May 3, moving into the women’s and men’s main draw on Friday. The round of 12 and quarterfinals are scheduled on Saturday with the semifinals and finals on Sunday.
