Path to Mersin finals takes shape on Friday

Mersin, Turkey, May 4, 2018 – It is a case of win or go home at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Mersin 3-star tournament on Friday with teams that lose their opening pool match given one last chance to progress.

Teams that win will progress to the first knockout round that takes place later on Friday, while those that lose will be looking ahead to the next stop on the World Tour, in Lucerne next week.

Teams that won their opening matches met on Thursday and the winners have progressed to the second knockout round and so have the chance to rest and recuperate on Friday. The losing teams have taken their place in the first knockout round.

In the men’s draw third seeds Diaz Nivaldo and Sergio Gonzalez of Cuba have to play off against Finland’s Jyrki Nurminen and Santeri Siren.

Turkey’s highest ranked men Hasan Mermer and Safa Urlu play France’s Maxime Thiercy and Arnaud Gauthier-Rat knowing that defeat will end their home challenge.

Across the draw in the women’s competition number four seeds Marleen Ramond-van Iersel and Joy Stubbe face the Czech Republic's Martina Bonnerova and Sarka Nakladova with their future in the tournament on the line.
