Barbara & Fernanda win all-Brazilian finale to net women's Fort Lauderdale Major gold

 
Fort Lauderdale, USA, March 3, 2018 - Fernanda Alves and Barbara Seixas won a pair of beach volleyball matches here on Saturday to capture the all-Brazilian women's gold medal at the $600,000 Fort Lauderdale Major by defeating compatriots Carolina Horta and Taiana Lima in the final.


Seeded ninth in the competition, Fernanda and Barbara posted a 2-0 (21-16, 21-13) win in 42 minutes over 20th-seeded qualifiers Carolina and Taiana to claim the $40,000 first-place prize. With the match the 59th all-Brazilian final in the history of the women's FIVB World Tour that started in August 1992, Carolina and Taiana split $32,000 for second-place.



Both teams won morning semifinals to pairs from the United States and Germany. Fernanda and Barbara out-lasted 13th-seeded Summer Ross and Brooke Sweat 2-1 (21-18, 26-28, 21-19) in 75 minutes. Carolina and Taiana posted a  2-1 (21-13, 12-21, 15-11) win in 41 minutes over 24th-seeded qualifiers Victoria Bieneck and Isabel Schneider of Germany.


In the women's bronze medal match, Ross and Sweat scored a 2-0 (21-17, 21-13) win in 32 minutes over Bieneck and Schneider. The Americans were playing in their second-straight Fort Lauderdale Major after placing fourth last February with a bronze medal setback to Chantal Laboureur and Julia Sude of Germany.



The men's competition on Sunday concludes the event as the Beach Major Series is staging an event at Fort Lauderdale Beach Park for the third time in the last four seasons. Teams from Brazil, Italy, Latvia and the United States remain in the men's competition.
