Lausanne, Switzerland, September 1, 2017 - China will present the double-gender FIVB Qinzhou 3-Star Open from October 12 to 15. This will be the second event on the 2017 portion of the calendar for the 2018 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour. It will be the first time that Qinzhou has hosted a FIVB World Tour event. Overall, China has hosted 61 total FIVB World Tour events.
Qinzhou is one of 11 Chinese cities to host an international FIVB beach volleyball event. Others have been Beijing, Dalian, Fuzhou, Lianyungang, Maoming, Nanjing, Nantong, Sanya, Shanghai and Xiamen.

FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graça F° said, “The aim of the new structure is to provide a platform and formation of events that increase the number of competitions in a growing number of hosting countries and create a sustainable business model while providing additional commercial flexibility and opportunities.”
China has hosted 61 FIVB World Tour events through the 2017 FIVB World Tour, including 25 men’s and 36 women’s tournaments. Host country China has won 24 previous medals on its country’s soil, including two men’s silver medals, seven women’s gold medals, 10 women’s silver medals, and five women’s bronze medals.
In the 25 FIVB men’s events through the 2017 FIVB World Tour, Brazil has the most men’s medals with 25, followed by the United States with 10, Germany with nine, Netherlands with six, Spain with five, Switzerland with three, China, France and Italy with two each and with one each men’s medal in China have been Argentina, Austria, Italy, Latvia, Mexico, Poland and Russia.
Through 36 FIVB women’s events in China through 2016, Brazil leads the medals race with 30 total followed by the United States with 26, China with 21, Germany with 11, Switzerland with five, Australia with four, Austria and Netherlands with three each, Lithuania with two and with one each women’s medals in China are Argentina, Canada, Italy, Norway and Spain.
With a history of over 1,400 years, Qinzhou is a modern coastal city in the Guangxi Province of China, and acts as the most convenient access of Southwest China to the sea.
Qinzhou is a prefecture-level city in Guangxi, China, lying on the Gulf of Tonkin and having an urban population of 433,000 and a metropolitan area population of over 3.5 million people.
The area originally belonged to Guangdong and was transferred to Guangxi in 1965. The city was originally in county Qinxian. From the beginning of the present era, Qinzhou was for many centuries the centre of Chinese overland trade with Indo-China.
Despite its latitude and location on the Gulf of Tonkin coast, Qinzhou has a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate, with short, mild winters, and long, hot and humid summers. Winter begins dry and rather sunny but becomes progressively wetter and cloudier.
The format, adopted in January of 2017 has all the FIVB Beach Volleyball international tournaments using the Star System from 1-5 having qualifying and a 32-team single-elimination tournament for 5-Star tournaments starting with qualifying followed by pool play and then single elimination knockout rounds. The 1-Star through 4-Star tournaments will modify as needed the basic format to accommodate the particular event with most having a single-elimination tournament. Country Quota playoffs returned as needed in 2015 to determine the final teams for the qualification tournament.
Part of the 2017 edition of the FIVB Sports Regulations for beach volleyball, the new FIVB World Ranking system is based on the FIVB Beach Volleyball Ranking Points earned at the eight best performances as a team in all FIVB sanctioned or homologated Beach Volleyball Events over a 365-days period. The FIVB World Ranking is updated every Monday after an FIVB sanctioned or homologated event granting FIVB Beach Volleyball Ranking Points.
The first men’s FIVB World Tour event was played February 17-22, 1987 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil while the first women’s FIVB World Tour event in Brazil was played in 1993 in Rio de Janeiro. The women’s FIVB World Tour held its first tournament in Spain in 1992.
